Lakers Offseason

It's never to early to talk about what is going to happen with this team now that the season is over.

We celebrated for a day and now it's back to business.

The main subjects are:

1. Kobe can opt out.

2. Phils contract is expiring, will he re-sign or resign?

3. Both Odoms and Arizas contracts are up.

Now that they got their first Championship since Shaq was traded and we seem to have a very bright future, i don't see any reason why Kobe would want to go anywhere else.

Phil is a great coach no matter what people say about him "riding coattails" (did i spell that right?) and if he stays, great. If he doesn't there are several good coaches out there and would jump at the chance to coach the defending champs, I'm sure.

Now even with Kobe being able to opt out and Phils contract expiring, I believe the most important part of our offseason is re-signing both Ariza and Odom. I doubt Kobe will opt out but if he does most likely he won't re-sign and therefore it's out of the front offices hands. I believe the same with Phil. He will either stay or go, it's all up to him what he wants to do.

If it comes down to signing either Odom or Ariza that is a very difficult choice. Ariza had his best season of his career by far and will be a hot commodity and will have Dollar signs for pupils. Odom will be asking for about the same price but is a little older than Ariza.

I would rather re-sign both like everyone else, but if it has to be one or the other i would have to go with Ariza. Ariza is a solid defender and has really improved his FT and 3pt shooting and seems like the sky is the limit for him. Odom is the most versatile player in the NBA and came up huge for us in the playoffs and had a better than expected postseason with his perimiter shooting, I just think Ariza is far more valueable than Odom right now.

Bynum will be more experienced and hopefully add more muscle to his build and we all know Gasol will be the same player next year. Powell should give us good minutes off the bench. (Yes I believe LA will re-sign him if his contract is up) And Besides Kobe Ariza is the best on ball defender on the team. That is why I feel we should keep Ariza if there has to be a choice.

But the main reason for me writing this post is that if Kobe wants to be considered the best player in NBA history (There is no doubt he is top 10 if not top 5) he has to do everything in his power to keep this team intact. If that means restructuring his contract and subtracting 8 Mill a year so we can split it up in Arizas and Odoms contract in order to keep them, then that's what he has to do.

While there are certain teams that are getting older and won't be as much as a factor, there are more teams on the come up and will be very competitve, like Denver and Portland, and LA has to keep this team intact if they want to get back to the WCF next year. I honestly don't think they can get back to even the WCF one man short of the top 6 players on this team.
